The Banks

Description:

A canal type venue that is 3-4feet (1mtr.-1.3mtr.) down the middle, shallowing to the far bank. Most pegs are between 11 and 12mtrs. wide although a few pegs are some 14.5mtrs. The venue holds 62 pegs although the maximum for a match is 55.

Species and size:

The venue holds most species of fish, but in matches it's 90% carp. These fish range from oz's to low doubles, although most are between 2lb and 4lb.

Methods:

The outlay of the venue lends itself very much to the pole. However the tackle needs to be very robust with most fish having to be steered away from the far bank features the moment they are hooked. The majority of fish are caught tight over, but don't ignore the deeper water down the middle or the margin's.

Bait:

The colder months see the maggot and caster approach working well, but when summer arrives these baits tend only to attract small fish. It's then time for pellet and paste with meat and corn having there days. One of the secrets to this venue is landing the fish you hook, because lots are lost every week.

Matches:

This is a very popular venue for clubs and the winning weights are rarely below 30lb. In fact twice last year (2000) 70lb plus weights were recorded in 3 hour matches. Like many venues the direction of the wind has a big say in which pegs will be the best on the day, but the following are always classed as "flyers" : 23, 45, 48, 49, 51, 54, 58, 60, 61.

Location:

Take the B4429 (just south of Rugby) at the crossroads take the turning for Barby. Drive for about a mile, crossing over the M45 and the Oxford Canal. The car park is 200mtrs. past the Canal bridge on your left.
